Recently, Chen Rui, Chief Executive Officer of Startorus Fusion, was invited to participate in Riding the Wave·2026 Tech Outlook, a special kick-off event hosted by The Paper. He delivered a keynote speech entitled Nuclear Fusion Energy: Principles, Industry and Future. In his speech, Chen explained the fundamental principles of fusion energy, reviewed the tortuous journey of human exploration of fusion energy over the past 70 years, and shared his insights and outlook on the future development of the controlled nuclear fusion industry.
He noted that three major trends are converging at an accelerating pace: continuous breakthroughs in key fusion technologies, strong societal demand for clean energy, and strategic guidance from national policies. Together, they form an unprecedented driving force propelling the development of fusion energy. In the next three to five years, a number of new fusion apparatus will be completed and put into operation globally, while more cutting-edge experiments will be launched in a concentrated manner, significantly speeding up the pace of technical verification. At present, fusion energy R&D stands at a critical juncture shifting from scientific and principle verification to engineering validation, and is rapidly moving from scientific exploration to engineering realization.
The year 2026 marks the start of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan period, with a surging wave of technology industrialization. The proposals for the 15th Five-Year Plan clearly call for forward-looking layout of future industries and for key areas including nuclear fusion energy to become new growth engines. This has opened an important window for the commercialization of fusion energy.
